Philosophy and Approach to Counseling: I believe strongly in a collaborative working relationship bringing together your knowledge of yourself, your needs and wants, and my skills and knowledge.  My first goal in our work together is to build a genuine, empathetic, safe relationship that will provide a foundation for the work we do.  Through creating this relationship, we have the opportunity to increase self-awareness, understand and accept patterns, and learn new skills and ways of engaging in relationships and in the world.

I believe in the strength and resilience of people. People are complex and all of us have values, beliefs, experiences, and traits that make us into unique individuals. I also understand that we are all part of larger social and environmental systems. Sometimes, our desires are conflicting, or confusing, sometimes barriers feel overwhelming. I help clients explore themselves and their world and gain insight.  Client’s find empowerment in the things they have control over so they can make choices to live their life in a way that honors their values and is in line with their goals.  I believe this exploration can be facilitated by and clarity can be achieved through the examination of our emotions.  I also believe that it is critical when doing this work to be supported by an accepting, loving, and authentic environment.

I am honored to do this work and have great respect for the courage it takes to engage in self-exploration with another person.  I ground my work in Internal Family Systems Theory and Person Centered Theory.  Internal Family Systems theory views our complex internal world as similar to a family with multiple parts and roles interacting together. At the center of it all we all have a core self that when we are connected to it allows us to live in our values, work with all parts of ourselves and remain grounded. Our parts of self can often be burdened, overworked and overwhelmed. Through open curiosity and inviting these parts of self to the table we are able to grow our connection to our core self and help our parts to heal and work together. Person Centered Theory prioritizes the relationship between client and counselor. As a counselor I aim to be an authentic real person in the room, to provide unconditional care, respect, and acceptance, and to understand your lived experience.

Education, Training & Experience: I have a Masters in Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Portland State University.  Major coursework included classes on theory and intervention, ethics, human growth and development, group therapy and family therapy.  I have also received my certification in Animal Assisted Human Health and Animal Assisted Play Therapy.  I own my own practice, Yellow Door Counseling. Previously, I have worked as a Primary Therapist at a residential and Intensive Outpatient Program working primarily with teens and their families, as a Student Intern providing individual mental health counseling for teens and adults, and as an Access Coordinator assisting college students with disabilities in receiving necessary accommodations. Prior to this, I worked for three years as a support person at a residential mental health facility.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor registered with the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists, I abide by its Code of Ethics.  I also abide by the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics. To maintain my license, I am required to participate in continuing education, taking classes dealing with subjects relevant to this profession.

Payment for Services: I am currently not paneled with any insurance companies. I accept direct payment from clients. My standard fees for 50-minute individual session is $150.00 and for a 50-minute family therapy session $200.00. For a group I charge $50.00 per person for a 60-minute session. Typically, individual or family therapy lasts between 6 months and 1 year.  Typically a group will have a set number of meetings between 8 and 12 sessions.

I reserve several low-cost spots for clients to support consistent access to care. Please call me to see what payment arrangements can be made. Accessible health care is a priority for me and I will do the best I can to make services available to you.
